Amberley Museum

Explore 40 acres of history nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park. With over 40 different exhibits to discover, from transport to industry to communications there is something for all ages and interests!

There is a narrow-gauge railway and bus service which visitors can ride on every day the Museum is open.

Formally known as the Amberley Chalk Pits, the Museum site was once a working chalk quarry from the 1840s until the 1960s. Many of the original buildings can still be seen including four sets of lime kilns. Our Life and Lime display explores the history of the chalk pits and its workers.

There are plenty of hands-on interactives across the Museum, where you can learn about the evolution of communications or find out how electricity is made. Explore a collection of over 25 vintage vehicles across the site – there is even a bus over 100 years old!
