Southside: Former St Katherine's Church

Heritage Open Day: St Katherine’s Church was built in the 1880s on the site of a Priory. It’s a beautiful Grade II listed building oozing with local history - experience the story of the site as well as see remains of the 14th Century Priory. St Katherine’s Priory was one of the most significant historical sites in medieval England, where kings and noblemen stopped to worship before entering the city. These included King John, Edward, the first Prince of Wales and it was the first resting place of Queen Eleanor and an ‘Eleanor Cross’ was erected, the remains of which can still be seen in the city. The ‘New’ church of St Katherine was built on the site of the old priory and you can see the 14th Century foundations inside it.
