Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (The Young Girls of Rochefort) (1967)
A film by Jacques Demy.
Following our well-received screening of ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’ last season., this is another classic musical offering from the great director, with music again by the legendary composer Michel Legrand.
The film is Demy’s tribute to the great Hollywood musicals, with a great ensemble cast including Catherine Deneuve, Françoise Dorléac, Danielle Darrieux, Jacques Perrin, Michel Piccoli, George Chakiris, Grover Dale and Gene Kelly.
Two sisters, played by real-life sisters Deneuve and Dorléac, try to escape their humdrum existence by finding the loves of their lives. The film is an exhilarating mixture of romance, farce, witty dialogue, singing and dancing. It is an effervescent and colourful celebration of life.
Duration 126 minutes, with English subtitles.
