Britain's What's On Event Guide
The Island
Prisoners John and Winston share a cell. After gruelling days working under the sun, they return to their dark cell to rehearse a makeshift performance of Sophocles' play Antigone for the other prisoners.
As they rehearse, they learn the news that John has successfully appealed his sentence and is soon to be released.
As the two of them grapple with the dehumanising effects of apartheid and imprisonment, the parallels of Antigone’s plight become all too real.
Elysium Theatre Company & Queen's Hall Arts Centre, Hexham present The Island, a rich and moving piece of theatre, which is hymn to the human spirit and a cry for freedom everywhere.
