French Polishing & Woodcare for Beginners
This one day beginners workshop with Oliver Piepereit from OP Woodcare is designed to give you the fundamental basics of French polishing and woodcare.
You will have a hands on day leaving learning the vital practical skills needed to refinish furniture recreationally. Each student will have a design consultation with the tutor before executing it on a small piece of furniture of their choice.
The French Polishing process allows for the piece of furniture to be revived and reinstated to its former beauty. Appreciating the artistry and craftsmanship in each piece of furniture makes the job of restoring a piece even more exciting and most therapeutic.
Skills/Techniques Covered
1. Health & Safety
2. Materials and tools needed
3. Stripping and neutralising
4. Sanding/removing residue
5. Grain fillers
6. Staining
7. Shellacs/French Polishing process
8. Shellac process
9. Touching in
10. Cutting back techniques
11. Rubbering – how to make and keep a rubber
12. Wire wools
13. Spirit wax application/buffing – quick fix
14. Aftercare
