Concert for Peace: The Armed Man
Gloucester Choral Society presents Donald Swann’s Requiem for the Living and The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins.
Karl Jenkins’ masterful composition is globally acclaimed and with good reason. The Armed Man is a mass intersected with sacred and secular texts that sharply convey the horrors of war. Even in the Sanctus, this deeply religious movement is surprisingly, yet powerfully, augmented by the percussive throb of an advancing army throughout. The Armed Man is described as “a mass for peace”. Jenkins makes his plea for this in a very moving musical portrayal of war.
And what of the Requiem for the Living? Well, yes, that’s Donald Swann of Flanders and Swann fame. Far more than one half of a (hugely popular) comic double act, Swann was a prolific composer in his own right. Requiem for the Living is rather alternative but a no-less sincere creation, one of several sacred works by the composer. Rarely performed, you’d be forgiven for not having come across the Requiem for the Living, so don’t miss your opportunity to hear it brought to life in Gloucester Cathedral.
