The Arts Society Ashdown Forest Lecture by Jo Banham
‘The Many Faces of William Morris’ examines a man of prodigious energy, talent and versatility. William Morris was a designer, craftsman, writer, lecturer, conservationist and revolutionary socialist. His over-riding passions were a love of art and making, and a hatred for the greed and inequality that characterised contemporary society. This lecture reviews his life, ideas and achievements, explores the highlights of his career and relationships with his wife and other artists and the reasons why he is still important and influential today.
Jo Banham is a freelance curator, lecturer and writer. She has had leading educational roles at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain, and roles as Curator at Leighton House and Assistant Keeper at Whitworth Art Gallery.
