Britain's What's On Event Guide
The Time Traveller's Pilgrimage
Today we have all sorts of music at our fingertips. A thousand years ago it wuld have been completely different. The second concert of the Middlewich and District Concert Society's 35th season should give us some idea how it changed over the centuries, from the Medieval period to the Renaissance. The journey begins in around 850 AD with Kassiani (a Byzantine Abbess composer), passes through Francesco Landini, Guillaime du Fay and Josquin des Pres in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries before finishing with John Dowland, Claudio Monteverdi and others in the seventeenth century. Our guides will be Deborah Catterall (Mezzo), Gareth Glyn Roberts (Tenor) and Richard MacKenzie (Lute/Baroque Guitar). This should provide a fascinating insight into a relatively unknown period of music. How was it written down? How much interaction was there between different places and schools of thought? Many more questions spring to mind. Hopefully some will be answered on the night.
