Arabia Phoenix Exhibition

An exhibition focusing on the period following the peaceful reunification of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932 by Abdulaziz Ibn Saud following a century of battling desert tribes and claims for influence of outside foreign power. It will look at the extraordinary and rapid development that occurred following the discovery of oil in 1938.

In 1934, British military officer, Arabist and explorer Gerald de Gaury was one of the first people to visit Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, following reunification of the Kingdom. He witnessed extraordinary changes over the next 30 years. He wrote a book about his experiences “Arabia Phoenix”.

The exhibition will include original photographs, drawings, maps and graphs from the 30s and will highlight dramatic change by using colour images of Arabia today – the phoenix risen. Notebooks, passports and de Gaury’s uniform will also be on display.
