About this Event

Developing Silk Painting Techniques

Silk Painting - An ancient art first developed in India and East Asia. Both Japan and China began using silk canvases for artistic means during the ninth century CE. This workshop is suitable for those who have attended a taster workshop or with some experience of silk painting.

Join Sue for a day of learning or developing silk painting techniques. You will make and take home a mounted A4 picture as well as your practice piece. First, we create a small piece of silk painting on a frame: trialling using Gutta to create marks and applying silk paints and salt. Once you have mastered the basics we progress to our main piece. Sue has a wide collection of designs and books for browsing or you can bring ideas and create your own design. Perhaps a photo of a favourite flower, bird or place. She will show you how to transfer your design onto the silk. After applying the resist, we give your piece time to dry but will use hairdryers to help the process along. Next, we use the paints to create your picture and I will guide you every step of the way. Sue provides all equipment. Just wear old clothes or bring an apron. Depending on your final design you may finish earlier than 4pm.

Silk painting is an accessible and fun process. Be prepared to allow the dyes to flow and enjoy the vibrant colours. For inspiration some of Sue's work will be on show as well as books on silk painting to browse through. Suitable for ages 16+
