About this Event
Hobson's Choice
HOBSON'S CHOICE by Harold Brighouse is a Lancashire comedy set in 1880. The title is taken from the popular expression, Hobson's choice—meaning no choice at all.
It bears many resemblances to the stories of Cinderella and King Lear including a deceased mother; three daughters, two of whom are pretty and frivolous, the third of whom is clever and hardworking; and a fairy godmother.
Henry Hobson runs a successful boot-maker's shop in nineteenth-century Salford. A widower with a weakness for the pub opposite, he tries forcefully to run the lives of his three unruly daughters. When he decrees 'no marriages' to avoid the expensive matter of settlements, eldest daughter Maggie rebels.
This is a classic comedy and is totally relevant in 2024.
