The 6th John Ruskin Prize: Seeing the Unseen, Hearing the Unspoken

The 6th John Ruskin Prize is set to open its doors, showcasing a record number of submissions from fine artists, makers and craftspeople from across the globe. The Big Draw is proud to announce that out of 4000 entries, 78 artworks from 68 artists, makers and innovators have been shortlisted.

This year’s exhibition called for artists to respond to the theme ‘Seeing the Unseen, Hearing the Unspoken’ in any medium or subject matter. The exhibition in turn, provides a platform for the unseen to be seen and the unheard to be heard, communicated through each artist’s own unique visual language.

The 6th John Ruskin Prize: Seeing the Unseen, Hearing the Unspoken, exhibition will open from Thursday 1 February until Saturday 17 February, at Trinity Buoy Wharf, with the Private View and Prize Giving Ceremony taking place on Wednesday 31 January. In conjunction with the exhibition will be a series of workshops on offer to the public.

The following awards will be announced at the Exhibition Launch and Prize Giving Ceremony: 1st Prize: £3000, 2nd Prize £2000, The Alan Davidson Under 26 Prize of £1000, The International Prize of £1000 and The 2024 Kate Mason Prize for Innovation of £1000.

The members of The 6th John Ruskin Prize selection panel included: Narinder Sagoo MBE, Cornelia Parker CBE RA, Bob and Roberta Smith RA, Gary Hill, Dr Rachel Dickinson and Jane Barnes.

Audiences can expect to see a multidisciplinary display and varying explorations of the overarching theme. Subject matters encompass cycles of loss and renewal, personal and family histories, power and domination, our environment and the effects of climate change, and egalitarian spaces to name a few.

Through mediums including painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, stop motion animation, film and photography, the exhibition presents a combination of traditional practice and social commentary, a dialogue offered through the selected artworks.
