Harmoniemusik - music for a wind ensemble - was popular in the 18th century, the rich, full sound of eight wind instruments enticing the likes of Mozart to create some of his finest music. The excellent wind players of Scottish Opera offer us a sumptuous feast of 18th to 21st century sounds, and some humour too: Carpenter’s ‘Musical Snooker Game’ is based on the Musical Dice Game invented by Mozart, himself an expert billiards player. Also inspired by Mozart is Jonathan Dove’s piece designed to precede a Glyndebourne production of ‘Figaro’. The tuneful Wind Octet by Vaughan Williams pupil Ruth Gipps is a more serious proposition, but the concert ends on a lighter note with our own Colin Suckling’s suite of musical cures for everyday maladies.
