Jon Lloyd Quartet
Saxophonist Jon Lloyd arrived on the UK free jazz scene in the early 1990s and rose to prominence with recordings and many UK and European concerts with his original quartet comprising John Law, Paul Rogers and Mark Sanders. This new Jon Lloyd Quartet plays contemporary European jazz, reuniting him with his original wonderful pianist, John Law (who also visited Cedars Hall in January), and incorporating the new dynamic young rhythm section of Alex Goodyear on drums and Nick Pini on bass.
Their improvisation on Jon’s sensitive and melodic compositions creates a remarkably rich tapestry of sound. The music has clear harmonic ideas and emphasis on melodic themes. So Jon’s new music is undoubtedly accessible but still having, with an exploratory verve, more of a European jazz aesthetic.
“A saxophone delivery as persuasive as a speaking voice. Lloyd should be seen and heard more often” - Brian Moreton, Penguin Guide to Jazz
