Spoon Carving Workshop for Beginners
A course for adults to carve their own spoon from green wood, using an axe and carving knives.
Carving freshly cut green wood with a sharp axe and knife is immensely satisfying and making a product that is both practical and beautiful from locally harvested wood is very rewarding. We will start with a round of wood and use the axe and chopping block to shape a spoon blank before moving on to use a craft knife and hook knife to further refine the bowl and handle. We’ll also cover tool sharpening and finishes for your spoon. All tools and materials are provided, just bring enthusiasm!
The course will be led by David Knight, David says I have been exploring woodland crafts for over 20 years and have a keen interest in relating an understanding of woodland ecology with the practical skills of woodland management and craft skills of making products from a wonderful sustainable raw material. I take my past experience in University continuing education into my teaching of craft skills to offer a rich immersive experience.
The course will take place on the lovely nature reserve at Sutton Courtenay Environmental Education Centre. Please bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided. We plan to hold the course outdoors, please come dressed for the weather, including sturdy footwear as paths may be wet and muddy. In case of very poor weather we can take part of the day inside/undercover. The course is suitable for adults.
We are committed to keeping our visitors, staff and volunteers safe. Please DO NOT attend if you or your child are unwell, or testing positive for an infectious illness, such as COVID-19. Your consideration is hugely appreciated.
Please note the centre is accessible by public transport with regular buses (including connection to Didcot Parkway railway station) serving Milton Park, a few minutes walk from the centre.
