May Day at Beamish Museum

In the Edwardian period, May Day was second only to Christmas in popularity and each town or village all over the country would have its own range of traditions and customs.

Speak to our friendly costumed folk to find out more about the customs of May Day, including how a 1900s Pit Village would have prepared for May Day as sprigs are placed on the doors of the Francis Street cottages in a tradition called May birching.
