Local opticians hosts event to raise awareness of common eye condition
Bayfields Opticians and Audiologists Woking are hosting an Open Day between 10th-11th May 2024, to raise awareness for a common eye condition – myopia, which affects 1 in 3 people in the UK.
As well as having Bayfield's expert team in practice to discuss myopia (more commonly known as short-sightedness) and available treatments, guests will be able to enjoy refreshments and fun activities for children.
There will also be the opportunity to support the Woking Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in the charity raffle. CAB provides vital services to the most vulnerable local residents, however now are facing funding cuts and need additional support.
Clients who are booked in for eye examination between 10th – 11th May will also be in with the chance of winning a National Trust family membership.
Mark Shelton, Optometrist at Bayfields Opticians and Audiologists comments; “Myopia is becoming more common, but more concerningly the severity of the condition is also increasing. Small levels of myopia are relatively safe to have but as the amount of myopia increases so does the risk of other potentially sight threatening conditions. Historically, Optometrists couldn’t do much about the level of the condition but luckily, we now have an array of options to slow down its progress.”
“As myopia increases, the length of the eyeball also increases, and this is what causes the increased risk of disease. The elongation of the eyeball is irreversible so it’s really important to pick it up early, monitor the progression and if appropriate manage the elongation. My advice would be to speak to your Optometrist about your myopia. As it nearly always starts in children and the earlier it starts the worse the likely outcome, parents need to be aware and need to understand the options available to them.”
