1914: Lubov Ranevskaya returns to the family estate from France, destitute. In her absence, the family running the estate have also fallen into financial difficulties. The Bank is going to sell the estate, with its beautiful but unproductive cherry orchard, at an auction. All may not be lost, however. Lopakhin, local kulak turned highly successful businessman, has a solution. One not attractive to the family who have their own ideas of how to extricate themselves from financial oblivion…
