RCP Museum Late: Reimagining the RCP’s brutalist ‘battleship’ architec
Experience the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP) Grade I listed home, where brutalist architecture meets centuries of tradition in this London Festival of Architecture event.
Explore our unique building, discover the development of our architectural design through a special archival display, and take the opportunity to join guided tour at 6pm with an expert from the RCP Museum team.
Described as a ‘battleship’ at its 1964 opening, the RCP’s London headquarters is a striking brutalist structure. The iconic, and sometimes controversial, building designed by architect Sir Denys Lasdun, boldly reimagined how the headquarters of England’s oldest medical college would be represented and designed around its occupants.
Learn how our unique building ‘matches and rhymes’ with its classical surroundings. Discover how RCP members – and neighbours – responded to Lasdun’s designs. Explore how later changes enable the building to serve today, in its contemporary reimagining as a modern membership organisation’s HQ, business venue, and public museum.
