This Acrylic Painting Workshop for beginners spans two days, with Day 1 focusing on materials, gridding up, sketching and some initial forays into painting technique. We'll conclude Day 1 by creating an underpainting using a limited-colour palette. Day 2 will focus on colour, building on our underpainting to produce a full-colour painting by the end of the day.
Day 1
In the morning session from 10 am to 11 am, participants explore acrylic paint properties and experiment with various materials on canvas paper. After a break, from 11 am to 11.20 am, attendees select an already gridded-up image, create a corresponding grid on canvas paper and start sketching in their composition. Those feeling more confident about getting their proportions right without a grid, can do so.
Following lunch, participants start painting using a limited-colour palette. They will be guided to create a tonal study or underpainting of their chosen image until 4 pm.
Day 2
We delve into colour theory (with accompanying exercises) from 10 am to 11 am. After the break, and up until lunch, attendees will begin adding full colour to their previous tonal study/underpainting. Post-lunch, from 1.30 pm to 3 pm, attendees continue painting, focusing on mixing their colours and getting more nuance out of them.
The day concludes with a session assessing the progress of our workshoppers, offering opportunities for reflection. Throughout both days, guidance and support are provided by the tutor to ensure a comprehensive learning experience.
