Windsor care home invites community to honour D-Day
A Windsor care home is opening its doors to the community for a 1940s-themed celebration and commemorative ceremony.
On Thursday 6th June, from 7.30pm-9pm, Care UK’s Queen’s Court on Dedworth Road is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of D-Day with its very own wartime era-themed soiree and lamp lighting ceremony.
The team has been hard at work organising a unique commemorative event that will see residents and guests enjoying a lively evening full of music, memories and traditional 1940s buffet-style refreshments.
There will be an exclusive performance of wartime songs by Adina, which is set to delight attendees who are being encouraged to dress in their finest period clothes and share their memories from decades gone by.
The special lamp, which represents the peace following the end of World War Two, will be lit at 9pm by Queen’s Court resident Gaynor Duggan, aged 81, who was both in the Army and the RAF and used to commemorate D-Day every year while serving in the forces.
Gaynor said: “I’m very excited and surprised to be chosen to light the beacon. It is a very special day for everyone in the UK as it gave us our freedom and independence, and to invite the community to this special occasion is wonderful. We are one big community and it means so much to celebrate 80 years.”
Councillors from Clewer East will also be attending and will be on hand to help light the lamp and commemorate the milestone occasion.
