Shinfield care home invites community to honour D-Day
A Shinfield care home is welcoming the community for a 1940s-themed garden party and commemorative ceremony.
On Thursday 6th June, from 2pm, Care UK’s Parsons Grange on Westall Street is inviting local people to honour the 80th anniversary of D-Day with its very own wartime era-themed community celebration.
The team has been hard at work organising a unique commemorative event that will see residents and guests enjoying a lively day full of music, activities and a barbecue prepared by the home’s talented chefs.
From 2pm-4pm, an exclusive performance by 1940s-style singer Hayley is set to delight attendees, who are being encouraged to dress in their finest period clothes and share their memories from decades gone by.
The special lamp, which represents the peace following the end of World War Two, will be lit at Parsons Grange by resident Raymond Povey, aged 86, who served as chairman of the Tilehurst Royal Legion for 20 years.
Raymond, who also served in the RAF for three years, in Cyprus, Jordon and Iraq in the 1950s, commented on being asked to light the lamp, saying: “Just one word I feel – proud”. On the day Ray will be proudly wearing his beret.
Rozina Ali, Home Manager at Parsons Grange, added: “We’re passionate about playing an active role in our community, so we’re delighted to be joining a nationwide initiative and opening our doors to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
