Dorset care home invites local community to honour D-Day

A Dorset care home is opening its doors to the community for a 1940s-themed celebration and commemorative ceremony.

On Thursday 6th June, from 2pm, Care UK’s Ferndown Manor on Golf Links Road in Ferndown is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of D-Day with its very own wartime era-themed street party and lamp lighting ceremony.

At Ferndown Manor, the team has been hard at work organising a unique commemorative event that will see residents and guests enjoying a lively day full of music, memories and traditional food from the wartime era.

An array of live entertainment is set to delight attendees, who are being encouraged to dress in their finest period clothes and share their memories from decades gone by.

The special lamp, which represents the peace following the end of World War Two, will be lit at 2.30pm by Ferndown Manor resident Dick Rhind, aged 91, who served in the RAF in his younger years.

Dick said: “I’m honoured to have been chosen.”

Members of the Royal British Legion will also attend the event, opening proceedings with a reading and helping Dick to light the lamp.
