In 1926 she was at the centre of a mystery as perplexing as any of her fiction which sparked one of the most extensive police hunts in history when she was missing, presumed dead, for eleven days. When she was eventually found in the Swan Hydro Hotel in Harrogate she claimed she was suffering from amnesia and remembered nothing.
