Waltham Forest Music Society presents 'An Evening With Paul Guinery'
Pianist and broadcaster Paul Guinery will be visiting the Waltham Forest Music Society for an evening of piano music 'on the lighter side' - perfect for a summer evening - which will conjure up musical images of bygone eras from Victorian to Elizabethan.
Paul Guinery will be familiar to many as an announcer and broadcaster on BBC Radio 3, for which station he has hosted a variety of programmes. He studied piano at the Royal College of Music and has since been widely active as a soloist, accompanist and chamber-music performer, as well as a broadcaster. In recent years he has explored music ‘on the lighter side’, particularly the richly rewarding, but nowadays neglected, treasury of English light music composed between the wars and on into the 1950s.
Drawing on his own extensive sheet-music collection, Paul has recorded two CDs for EM Records, Dicky Bird Hop and Chasing Moonbeams, with a third, Finger Prints, due for release in May. These have been aired on Radio 3, reflecting the BBC’s former role as a great champion of light music from its very early days.
Paul’s nostalgic recital will highlight this beautifully crafted, highly melodic repertoire to which more ‘serious’ composers such as Bax, Quilter and Scott occasionally contributed. It will include music by Arthur Sullivan, Billy Mayerl, Hubert Bath, Edward German, Jack Strachey, Vivian Ellis, Richard Addinsell and many others.
7.30 pm. Doors open at 7
