Mapping the Undercliffs Nature Reserve

In 2023-24, nature journaling artist Alex Boon spent a year documenting the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve section of the South West Coast Path. During this time, he walked the path through the reserve, the foreshore below it, and some additional routes such as Seaton Wetlands and Pinhay Warren. Alex recorded all of these routes by hand, inspired by the strip maps of the Britannia Road Atlas made by John Ogilby in 1675. In creating these, Ogilby had taken a unique approach, which Alex replicates, as the map follows the road itself, with the relevant landmarks and bearings described along the route.

Alex has now produced three detailed hand-drawn maps of the amazing wildlife and sights along this path. His intention has been two-fold: to show the diversity of life in this short stretch of coastline and to encourage local people and visitors to explore the Undercliffs themselves. The large originals will be on show and offered for sale at the Museum, as will be smaller printed versions which visitors can take on their own Undercliff adventure.

A talk and guided tour of the exhibition will take place on Tuesday 23 July at 14:30, and you can also join the artist for a nature journaling tour of the Lyme Regis end of the Undercliffs on Saturday 7 September, from 9.30-4.00.
