Historic Wherry Maud visits Cantley

To mark the second part of her 125th anniversary tour of the Broads, the Wherry “Maud” is retracing trips from her previous commercial life and commemorating a time when wherries were still an important part of the Broadland cargo transport system. Maud , as a motor wherry, delivered sugar beet during the 1935-36 campaign and the 1936-37 campaign to Cantley Sugar Factory.

On Saturday, 22nd June “Maud” will be open to visitors and will be available for viewing at The Reedcutter Pub, Cantley. Weather permitting, her Pop-Up Museum will also be open from 11 am to 5 pm. Visitors will be welcomed by volunteer members of the Trust who will be happy to chat about “Maud”, her history and current use.

With her distinctive black sail, “Maud” is one of Norfolk’s best loved sights on the Norfolk Broads. The only remaining trading wherry of typical clinker construction, she is maintained by the Wherry Maud Trust.
