Whiteley pedals ahead with local fundraiser
Shoppers at Whiteley are being encouraged to get involved in a fun cycling challenge taking place at the centre on Thursday 20th June to help support the work of local charity, Sophie’s Legacy.
Between 9am – 6pm, 2 static bikes will be located on the Whiteley stage at the centre with staff and visitors encouraged to hop on and cycle for as long as they can manage in an attempt to complete 300km throughout the day.
The initiative is part of the wider ‘Seven for Sophie’ challenge taking place across the South of England which will see both teams and individuals complete a 300km endurance ride, visiting seven of the 11 hospitals the charity supports.
The route was chosen as it forms the shape of an ‘S’ and visits seven of the original hospitals that receive support. The challenge is due to depart from Guildford at 4:30am and arrive in Southampton at 10pm.
Sophie's Legacy was created in memorial of Sophie Fairall and the legacy of change she wanted to create. They support families admitted to hospital with their children. Sophie passed away aged 10, in September 2021.
Whilst the charity is trying to achieve national change for Sophie’s wishes an important ethos of the charity is to support families locally who end up in hospital with their child. The support varies depending on each situation. They provide food, snacks, toiletries, clothing, vouchers and clothing. Many other needs are met on a referral basis.
Volunteers from the charity will be at Whiteley on the day to fundraise and would be grateful for donations of both food and toiletries. The food donations should be individually wrapped and nonperishable items (no nuts) such as porridge pots, mini cookies, crisps, chocolate bars, microwave rice pouches and pot noodles. Toiletries could include roll on deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothpaste and toothbrushes.
