Newbury Choral Society - Great Cathedral Anthems
The liturgical tradition and practice of the Church of England is rich and varied. It has resulted in a large body of music which is widely performed in Sunday services, morning prayers and evensongs. The great cathedrals of England have, over the centuries, been the birthplace of some of the finest examples of English choral music ever written. The summer concert of the Newbury Choral Society showcases anthems new and old, familiar and lesser known, selected by Music Director Joe Tobin, himself a former chorister.
After the resounding success of their St Nic’s performance of Mozart’s Requiem, the choir moves to Douai Abbey for this performance, where the acoustic will be sure to do justice to these anthems. Concert-goers who have experienced the atmosphere provided by Douai will relish the opportunity of hearing these great choral works in such a setting, with the time-honoured words soaring to the roof.
The programme features works by Elgar, Wesley and Parry, amongst others, all composers who at one time or another brought their skills to the devotional works featured in this concert. The words of familiar Biblical texts and the church liturgy find their finest expression here. Joe Tobin is sure to bring to their interpretation the care and nuance which have characterised his concerts thus far.
