Reading Symphony Orchestra Sinfonietta concert

Conductor: Cathal Garvey

Stravinsky – Suites 1 and 2 for Small Orchestra
Dvorak – Czech Suite
Haydn – Symphony No.99

Reading Symphony Orchestra’s chamber group, the RSO Sinfonietta, is delighted to be returning to All Saints’ Church, Downshire Square, on Saturday 14 September 2024 for our early autumn concert.

Stravinsky’s Suites 1 and 2 for Small Orchestra can best be described as quirky, jubilant and fun. Orchestrated from his eight piano duets with “easy right hand” which he composed for his children, the movements include a quiet, meandering Andante, a boisterous Italian street song, a March, a Waltz invoking the puppet music of his ballet Petrushka, a lively Polka and a romping Galop.

Dvorak wrote his Czech Suite at a time when his fame as a composer was burgeoning and when nationalist music was growing in popularity. The Suite is in five movements, three of which are based on traditional Czech dances and two of which invoke the countryside of Bohemia, the inspiration behind much of Dvorak’s music. The Suite is beautifully lyrical and ends with a Furiant – a lively and exuberant dance.

Haydn’s Symphony No.99 is the seventh of his twelve “London symphonies”. It premiered in February 1794 at the Hanover Square Rooms in London, with Haydn directing the orchestra, and met with rapturous applause. It is the first of Haydn’s symphonies to use clarinets, most likely due to Mozart’s influence. As with much of Haydn’s music, the Symphony is joyful, glorious and uplifting, and a fitting piece for the second half of this lovely concert.
7:30pm.
Tickets are £15 for adults and £6 for students and under-18s, available from WeGotTickets (for which there’s no booking fee) or on the door (subject to availability).
