Britain's What's On Event Guide
Sheffield Skeptics in the Pub
Sheffield Skeptics in the Pub was founded in December 2009 and is a good way for people from all walks of life to hear from experts and discuss with them important issues that affect us all, while enjoying their favourite beverage. Meetings are held every third Monday of the month at Farm Road Sports & Social Club, Farm Road, Sheffield S2 2TP from 7.30 pm. There is no need to book and no entrance fee, but a voluntary donation of £3 is welcome to cover speaker's expenses and room hire. Parking is free.
Our August 2024 event is a presentation by Chris French and is titled Hidden messages (that aren't really there). ‘One of the reasons that we are so successful as a species is our ability to detect meaningful patterns and significance in the world around us. However, in some situations we think we see meaning and significance when it is not really there. This light-hearted and highly interactive will present many examples of this phenomenon including the writings of Nostradamus, the Bible Code, detecting bullshit, our poor appreciation of randomness, and several amusing examples of pareidolia in both the visual and auditory domains.’ Chris French is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London. His most recent book The Science of Weird Shit will be on sale at the meeting.
This event is on Monday August 19th at 7.30 pm. No charge, but donations welcome.
