Daughters of the Sea: An Evening of Surf Shorts

Surf on Screen

An evening of short surf films curated by Swansea based community, Daughters of the Sea. From longboarding lifestyle, to pioneering Ghanian surfers and skaters, and the epic swells of the Portuguese winter scene, these short films celebrate an exciting generation of female surfers.

‘Lifting women to the surface of cold-water surf culture’ DOTS

Obseassion (32’) - A true artist of classic longboarding, Laure Mayer has found her rhythm and her lifestyle in Byron Bay, Australia. A life of surfing, travelling and encounters that has allowed this entrepreneur to build friendships all over the world. Back in Europe, she decided to go on a road trip along France, Spain and Portugal, in which Laure met Estelle, Paula, Andrea, Inés and Ria. Just like Laure, these surfers have chosen a lifestyle that allows them to enjoy the priceless freedom of surfing as often as possible.

Directed by Romain and Laura Decomble, Obseassion offers a portrait of six proud women of this generation of longboarders that claim their spot in the line-up to simply enjoy and glide from the nose of their boards.

Yama (23’) - Australian surfer and activist Lucy Small travels to Ghana to meet with a group of pioneering female surfers and skaters.

Once a stronghold of the transatlantic slave trade and with a history of Atlantic aquatic surf culture that precedes colonial invasion, this is a story of a reclamation and joy.

Aiming to tell a story that challenges the representations that many African nations are commonly subjected to in western media, Yama begins in the bustling city of Accra and travels to the wave rich coastline where there are communities driving the budding Ghanaian modern surf scene.
