Making Sense of Modern Art - A talk by Valerie Woodgate

Society changed more rapidly in the twentieth century than at any time in the previous four thousand years. So did art. This lecture will explain many modern movements and the artistic response to political and social upheavals, including both World Wars, which inspired some of the great masterpieces of modern art. Recent decades have seen a questioning of the nature and language of art, with Post-Modernism and the Turner Prize.

About Valerie Woodgate

Valerie is currently a Lecturer and Guide at Tate Britain and Tate Modern for the Art Fund, the National Trust, U3A, City of London libraries (Barbican and Guildhall), and other organisations. She also lectures on Zoom for arts organisations. Formerly a Tate Guide for 39 years, Valerie was also a member of Teaching Team at Dulwich Picture Gallery. As well as giving lectures and offering evening courses for DPG, she presented 50 Study Days. Her other activities included delivering lectures and courses at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; on P&O cruises (representing the Tate) and at the University of Cape Town. She was also a script-writer for The Living Paintings Trust.
