Derby Arboretum Tour

Heritage Open Day: Michael McNaught, Community Parks Officer, will guide the group around the park, which opened in 1840, and explain the innovative design features and vision, global origins of some of the specimens, and the Arboretum’s historical significance. Derby Arboretum is a public park and arboretum in the city of Derby, and is listed as Grade II* on the Historic England Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. It opened in 1840, to designs by John Claudius Loudon, following the donation of the land by local philanthropist Joseph Strutt, and was the first publicly owned, landscaped, urban, recreational park in England. The Arboretum holds Green Flag status and has been a Green Heritage Site since 2020. Michael McNaught has 15 years’ experience with Derby Parks Department and is passionate about the Arboretum and its continuing thriving and development.
