Lount Colliery Centenary Celebration

Heritage Open Day: 2024 marks one hundred years since the first shaft was sunk at Lount Colliery in the village of Newbold Coleorton, Leicestershire. Explore the history of the mine and meet characters from the 1920s who shaped our community. The village of Newbold Coleorton in Northwest Leicestershire, has a rich history of coal mining and in 1924, the first shaft was sunk for the Lount Colliery (1924-1968) which lies to the south of the village. The Lount Colliery played an important part in shaping our landscape and community and provided employment, infrastructure and spin-off enterprises for Newbold and the surrounding area. Our Heritage Open Day invites you to step back in time with captivating exhibitions, enlightening talks and immersive encounters with characters who will bring to life the people who lived and worked in and around the mine during the 1920s.

The open day will allow visitors to tour the colliery site (now the New Lount Nature Reserve) with expert guides.
