Three-headed Dragon in Thorpe Arnold Church
Heritage Open Day: Thorpe Arnold church contains some unusual stone carvings, particularly notable is the figure fighting two dragons on the early Norman font. You are most welcome to come and have a look around. Our beautiful medieval church is open for the annual Ride and Stride charity event, and also to visitors. The current church building dates from circa 1200, with Early English, Decorated, Perpendicular and Transitional Norman architecture. The oldest and most distinctive item in the church is the early Norman stone font, circa 1170. The carvings include a figure holding a sword, boldly fighting two dragon-type beasts. There is debate as to whether this depicts St George fighting two dragons, or St Michael defeating Satan.
