Britain's What's On Event Guide
Sir John Moore Foundation Museum
Heritage Open Day: Museum about Appleby Magna, Sir John Moore, and other local heroes. With exciting new exhibitions about the local area and education in the Industrial Revolution, and co-produced works with the local community and the Sir John Moore Primary School. Why on earth is there an enormous school, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, in Appleby Magna? And who was Sir John Moore?
This beautiful school, now a grade I listed building, was opened in 1697 as a free school and is still home to the local primary school. The museum, which is in the former dormatories, explores what life was like at the school in Victorian times. With new exhibitions about the 1697 school and the later fee-paying school, there is a wealth of new information to find out.
