Heritage Open Day: This talk focuses on the life and work of Goole pierhead painter Reuben Chappell (1870-1940). It follows the artist from his early life growing up close to Goole's docks and ships, through establishing himself as a professional painter of ships as a young man, and later leaving the town and life he knew for Cornwall, where he settled with his family. The talk also explores the wide variety of vessels trading on the Humber in the late 19th century, which Chappell captured in his artwork. It also looks at the legacy of these paintings in Goole and ports across Europe, and their importance as a source to those who study the evolution of shipping technology.
