Connections: Lincolnshire’s Ecclesiastical Heritage and Britain’s Military History

Heritage Open Day: Come and learn the story of Major Almonds, his incredible wartime story and the part he played in British military history; a story recently adapted for television via the BBC series SAS Rogue Heroes. A brass plaque near the font of St Peter's Church is in memory of Major ‘Gentleman Jim’ Almonds, resident and scholar of Stixwould who was a founder member of the SAS and died in the village in 2005. This plaque connects the church to the story of Major Almonds. His life story begins and ends in Stixwould and is directly connected to Stixwould Village Hall. Major Almonds’s family moved to the village in 1874 and both he and his father were pupils at the school until the age of fourteen. There will be an exhibition at Stixwould Village Hall funded by a National Lottery Heritage Fund which looks at his early life.
