The Breach House

Heritage Open Day: One of D H Lawrence’s childhood homes, now an authentic re-creation of a typical miners' dwelling. Lawrence lived here between 1887 and 1891 and later used it as a setting for the early part of his novel Sons and Lovers. The Breach House, Eastwood, was one of D H Lawrence’s childhood homes. His father was a miner and the lower floor has been recreated as it would have looked during that period. The Lawrence family moved there in 1887 when Lawrence was 2 years old, and they left in 1891. It is immortalised in Lawrence’s 1913 novel Sons and Lovers. The upper floors comprise of living accommodation (not occupied) including a sitting room and a dedicated library room housing a collection of Lawrence-related literature.
