Mersea Roman Barrow

Heritage Open Day: The Roman Barrow Mound is an excavated burial chamber, the contents of which are in Mersea Museum. They are the cremated remains of a male contained in a glass Roman cremation urn, found with a lead casket. It was excavated in 1912. Roman burial Mound dated 100 - 120 AD. Before being led in, visitors will receive a short informative and illustrated talk. Visitors can then enter the burial chamber by means of a narrow, gated door into a corridor with low level lighting. There are a few steps down into the actual chamber room which can hold up to ten people on a tour. There is also an opportunity for able bodied people to climb to the top of the Mound, through the trees to get an idea of it's height and position relative to the mainland.
