Quaker Meeting House
Heritage Open Day: An exhibition in the Quaker Meeting House about the influence and lives of local Quakers on the occasion of George Fox's 400th Anniversary. Maldon Quaker Meeting House.
How local Quakers changed society
Our exhibition this year is about the life of George Fox and other Local Quakers who made a difference to society.
400 years since George Fox was born. He started the Society of Friends, commonly called Quakers because they used to sometimes ‘quake’ before ministering.
The movement began in Lancashire and was spread around the world by early Quakers who suffered greatly, some losing their lives- because they were non-conformist. They were persecuted by the English authorities and by other countries too. Some early missionaries to the America were hanged.
