Thomas Plume Library exhibition Routes, Networks and Connections

Heritage Open Day: The Thomas Plume library presents an exhibition of maps, some dating back to the 1500's, on Routes, Networks and Connections on Saturday 14 September 2024 10am to 4pm. Thomas Plume’s Library was established in 1704 under the terms of the will of Dr Thomas Plume, archdeacon of Rochester and vicar of Greenwich. The Library of over 8,000 books and pamphlets assembled by Plume during his lifetime is still housed on the first floor of the building erected by him for this purpose in about 1699. In this the Library is a very rare survival. Plume had been born in Maldon in 1630 and was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford, and Christ’s College, Cambridge. The Library has been supported since 1988 by the friends of Thomas Plume’s Library, whose main object is to replace the 700 or so books that are known to have gone missing over the years.
There is a rare opportunity to look at maps from across the past 500 years as part of Heritage Open Day.
