About this Event
St Laurence Church, Upminster
Heritage Open Day: An opportunity to look around this beautiful and historic church. There will be a display of current and historical information, a children's trail and stewards available to answer questions. There has been a church on this site since the original 'minster' was founded by St Cedd in the 7th century. The current building dates from the 12th-20th centuries and remains a vibrant yet peaceful place for Christian worship and community. One of the church's past Rectors was the scientist William Derham, who measured the speed of sound from the church tower, and the church contains numerous other memorials to local people of note, including the Holden family who were the incumbents for many years. There is also interesting stained glass, including a window of armorial and domestic glass dated 1630. The organ was installed by Tickell's in 2003.
