St Peter and St Paul Church, Scarning

Heritage Open Day: Scarning Church, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, stands proudly at the crossroads in the centre of the village. It is Grade 1 listed and has some very fine features. The oldest part of the church is thought to date from the 13th century. The south wall contains some intriguing fragments of stone which might have been recycled from an earlier building. Features include a massive 13th century stone font with ornate cover, a very wide nave, a delicate chancel screen and a gloriously vibrant east window. Visitors will be able to visit the belfry to see the fine set of bells. We will have displays on local history and on Scarning’s famous rector, Dr Augustus Jessopp, who was chaplain to King Edward VII and a renowned author.
