Built in 1854, its architects, Cruso and Maberley, used the latest technology to construct the Corn Exchange. The façade is baroque and prominently features Ceres, the Goddess of Corn. Although built for local farmers to sell their corn, the Corn Exchange has hosted a variety of events, including celebrations for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, election counts, preaching and, in 1909 ‘… a most up-to-date roller-skating rink’.
In 1996, the building was restored and refurbished as a 700-seat theatre, which offers a full programme of entertainment and events.
