Suffolk Lacemakers - display and demonstration of bobbin lacemaking
Heritage Open Day: Suffolk Lacemakers will be promoting and demonstrating the heritage craft of bobbin lacemaking
See lacemakers at work, look at a display of their work and try for yourself at the 'Have A Go' lace pillow Members of Suffolk Lacemakers will be showing visitors to Christchurch Mansion how bobbin lace is made and giving people the opportunity to try out this ancient craft at a 'Have a Go' lace pillow. Bobbin lacemaking began to be made in the 16C and up until about 1800 all lace was made entirely by hand as a huge cottage industry. The industrial revolution resulted in the development of machines producing machine made lace thus effectively killing the handmade industry by the eary 20C.
