Open Day At Derwentcote Steel Furnace

Heritage Open Day: Explore the interior of the Derwentcote Steel Furnace Buildings which are not usually open to the public. The site will be open 10am-3pm with our fantastic volunteer guides on site to answer any questions. Derwentcote Steel Furnace is the earliest and most compete steel-making furnace to have survived in Britain. This rare furnace played a crucial role in the British steel industry for around 150 years. Built in the 1730s, it was used for cementation, a process that converted wrought iron into steel. Derwentcote furnace went out of use by 1891 and subsequently fell into disrepair. It was restored by English Heritage in 1990.
