A Walk in the Park
Heritage Open Day: A Heritage Walk in the Park covering the history of the first People's Park in Newcastle, its setting in the Leazes Conservation Area and some of its flora & fauna Leazes Park occupies a unique place in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. It has provided recreational and respite facilities for the inhabitants of the city for over 150 years. Its location means that it is used by those working in the city, by hospital patients and visitors, by University students and city centre shoppers as well as by the surrounding communities.
“Leazes†means “meadowlands†and the tract of land on which the park is built has a history going back to the 13th century when King John gave the land to the townsmen of Newcastle to be used for grazing their cattle. The area includes Castle Leazes and the adjacent Town Moor which are also preserved as valuable green spaces in the city.
