Heritage Open Day: Did you know that the University of Chester originated as Chester Diocesan Teacher Training College in 1839, founded by a distinguished group of local leading figures in the Church of England? The vision of the founders including John Bird Sumner, Bishop of Chester (later Archbishop of Canterbury) and Henry Raikes, Chancellor of the Diocese of Chester; in 1839 was to resource Church of England schools by their creation of Chester Diocesan Teacher Training College; their motivation was the church’s commitment to the wellbeing of all, their inspiration the church’s traditions of scholarship and learning devoted to the search for truth and the service of society.
